Maz Goes Deep Again on His Big Day
PITTSBURGH -- On a balmy Sunday afternoon that had a distinct hint of Oct. 13, 1960, in the air, Bill Mazeroski couldn't have been more nervous if he was at the plate in the ninth inning of Game 7 of the World Series.
Nearly 50 years to the month that Mazeroski hit the greatest home run ever in that very situation, the son of a West Virginia coal miner did the unthinkable once again. On his 74th birthday, he stepped up to a microphone and went deep again, this time at the dedication of a statue in his name on Mazeroski Way outside PNC Park.
“Geez, how could anyone dream of something like this?” the Hall of Fame second baseman wanted to know in a voice that cracked with emotion. “All I wanted to be was a major ballplayer. I didn't need all this.”
Ten All-Star Game selections, eight Gold Gloves, a major league record 1,706 double plays turned and .323 postseason batting average suggested otherwise, though.
Oh, and there was that home run . . .
