Free Agents

It's realistic that the Pirates could go out & spend $20M on FA's this year {They won't do it} but, It could get 3 top line players. Let's have a vote what 3 legit FA's would you want to see signed & for how much each? Remember $20M.

Polatta:

Pence won't be a free agent until 2014. Now that the Astros want to dump payroll, he fits their game plan.

If its D'Arnaud PR I'll eat my shorts. Guy isn't close to getting here. The right handed outfielder with power looked great again tonight. Too bad he plays for Houston. Pence and Milledge are worlds apart. Even Arizonabruce, the leader of the Milledge fan club, has to admit the difference!

Buc4life:

Expect a starting pitcher(s) and a right-handed first baseman-outfielder with power to be high on the wish list. My guess is that some combination of Cedeno, Ciriaco and Diaz will play shortstop next season with d'Arnaud to follow.

Besides the shortstop situation, the main issue is the right side of the diamond. Is Jones your first baseman or is it going to be Clement or pearce? what about right field is it a platoon situation or is Moss going to be given another shot considering his season at AAA. Or is it going to be a free agent signing bringing in a power hitter? The run production is so poor it would be hard to believe if it ain't priority no. 1

I believe that John Russell is a good man. I also feel that he has had little to work with (team turnover in 2009, inexperienced players in 2010). However seeing how the change in Baltimore has been dramatic and to see the Pirates showing no signs of life, the situation has to be looked at seriously. It's a moot point since WV Jimmy Olson won't eat his salary for next year, but even the most ardent fans of the Bucs have started to tune out.

Going to be interesting how management addresses the horrible run production situation, needless to say it is the BIG reason for many of the losses the last few years.

Feel sorry for Ross, he's record going into friday's game in no way indicates the way he has pitched. Karstens is a close second, he don't get much run support either.Like Jones but not in the no. 4 slot. Two big rbi men in the 4 and 5 slots will go a long way in turning this around.

And hes not arbitration-eligible until after the 2012 season.

The Bucs have McCutchen under control til 2015, so I'd say theres alot of time to negotiate an extension.

BuddyT21

Why would he be extended? He's under control for several more years. I think instead of jumping the gun and paying big bucks to guys who have one big year make them earn it. Who the*****was the cornerstone? AAA McClouth? Really? Perfect example of waiting and making a guy prove he can do it for a couple of years before buying out his arbitration eligibility. And if they don't increase payroll this offseason then they are fooling us. This should be the offseason to see some spending.

Polatta, you really have to quit wishing that McLouth was still a Pirate...we would have a worse record than now if he was still out cornerstone...

When is it time to increase Buddy? McCutchen should have already been extended. The cornerstone was signed and dealt. Their is no plan bro, when are you guys gonna wake up and quit being so gullible. PR, I forgot, you're impressed with $34M payrolls from your boss that results in the worst record in all of baseball. Keep drinking the juice Paul, u just look silly!

The Royals baby! 47-67! Awesome example sis of why the Pirates don't need to spend all that money on payroll. We can lose just the same way spending #30M less and by letting our core grow. When it's time they will increase. If not then the plan is bullcrap.

Polatta:

The Royals spent $24.4 million on Guillen (since released) and Meche this season. Maybe your're impressed, but the rest of us are not.

PR, I certainly didn't miss the $10M spent 2 years ago, the bulk of which was on Pedro. They would have to b high on the money spent list cause they pick in the top 5 every year. Like I said, NO WAY they sign both! And PR, the $3M more they spent on the draft than Kansas City still has them paying $35M less than the Royals for the year. Since u obviously missed that! $35 MILLION bro!

Rosario

I see them signing both. Theres no reason for Taillon to not sign, its not like he can go to college in hopes of increasing his stock. He was the second overall pick, whats he going to shoot for, number 1? It would make so much more sense for him to cash in now and not risk doing subpar in college or injury. Allie might be looking for first round money, but I still see them signing both.

Plesase don't try to engage Polatta in an intelligent conversation. To do so leaves him at a competitive disadvantage and forces us to read his mindless rants. If the Pirates don't sign the top two picks, criticism will be in order. Until then, most of the criticism should be aimed at MLB for this bizzare signing deadline that forces prospects to choose between hardball negotiating and wasting their first year of professional baseball.
