It's realistic that the Pirates could go out & spend $20M on FA's this year {They won't do it} but, It could get 3 top line players. Let's have a vote what 3 legit FA's would you want to see signed & for how much each? Remember $20M.

Anyone who's played baseball above the High School level knows that having a catcher you have confidence in can mean the difference between being able to bounce that 2 strike breaking ball to get a chase or leaving it up and it getting hit because you don't have faith in your backstop. I don't think anyone is blaming Doumit for the Pirates pitching overall but having a great defensive catcher can make a difference. All of these players are talented or they wouldn't be in MLB. Confidence separates two equal ability players.

don't believe for a second that the trading is over. just read doumits comments in the papers and i still think they will trade either duke or maholm.i don't buy that a catcher is the one who makes or breaks a pitching staff. for example, arizona has just as bad a pitching staff as the pirates yet everyone says that snyder is a great catcher.

Series is right Nate is lucky he still has a job. The Braves are trying to win it all this year but they left the cupboard quite bare after these trades and im sure the Escobar trade is going to come back and bite them. As for people who think we were "dumping salary" (Bob Smizik) I just want to know how your that clueless. We added payroll for the next two seasons and sent money to LA in the Dotel deal, all for bench players and 3 mid 30's relievers. It should be considered "Dumping useless players" not "Dumping Salary"

With the Braves acquiring Rick Ankiel, Nate McLouth would be a long shot at best to be on the Braves' post-season roster

BTW, I was right about Adam Dunn last year. You can twist the Sano story all u want, but what I said was correct. I also said IF Tampa gets Dunn, they'll win it. They didn't, so the best BATS left would match Texas and Atlanta in October. Put your money down on Nate McClouth and the Atlanta Braves to win it all.

PR, while I'm not an Astros fan, your comments regarding a team that spends over $90M fall on deaf ears and really make u look silly. Only 1 team can win it all but ALL teams are expected to try. The Astros put together a team and TRIED to compete. Because they didn't win it doesn't give u the right to call them out. You write for a team that refuses to even try, and you act like that '79 Championship was within the last 30 years! Bro, you were in grade school then. And to act like the Pirates do things the right way and never say a negative word while they sit 30 games under is irresponsibe.

On May 1, Lambo was suspended 50 games following a second positive test for a "drug of abuse" under baseball's Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. The drug was not specified, but many media outlets, including ESPN and Baseball America, have documented that Lambo has a history of trouble with marijuana. The issue was not one of performance-enhancing drug. (as written bye Dejan Kovacevic of the post-gazette)

I like the trades the Pirates have made. They traded from depth and guys that would not be around the next few years and got an interesting haul of players. Snyder is a good defensive catcher who has some pop. Cirianco is another young ss to add to the mix for Ryan Church, Bobby Crosby and DJ Carrasco. The only one of that group was worth anything was Carrasco. Dotel for McDonald and Lambo. You have two guys who can close in Meek and Hanrahan so this was a case of selling high on Dotel. Then Javy Lopez for Joe Martinez and John Bowker. Which was a marginal trade but Martinez showed promise before getting hit in the face and Bowker has a nice left handed swing. This for the 1st time feels like these trades somewhat make sense and not just a trade for the sake of trading someone.

I caught the article in the Post. Doumit must of been shocked to be benched, given his play/health behind the plate he really shouldn't be. I guess Snyder sticks until Sanchez earns the spot. On the MLB network a few analysts mentioned Doumit might be damaging the progress and success of the starting rotation.

As far as cheating, I'm pretty sure Lambo's offense was marijuana related.

lancem: The Pirates have had very few convicted cheats over the years, maybe fewer than any major league organization. (Is that another reason why they haven't won in awhile?) Huntington said the necessary background check was done on him. He deserves a second chance, but three strikes and you're out in my league. PL

I like the moves yesterday, I liked the vets that were here but they serve no purpose on a team in last place. I am interested to see what happens with Snyder and Doumit in 2011.

Polatta you also though the Rays were gonna get Dunn and "win it all!". As for the Astros, they got what? 1 major leaguer in JA Happ at the deadline? The rest are in the minors bra. As for us, we got 1 player who fits below AAA in Lambo, the rest are in the bigs of AAA almost certain to be in the majors by the end of the season. Im pretty sure you just sit there thinking of things you can whine about.

Polatta: In other words, the Astros grossly overpaid for talent. They haven't won anything in the last five years. They also never won a World Series in their existence. PL

again fiction passed as facts, sanos agent told every team not to talk with his family and only talk with him.the pirates ignored him and that is why he didn't sign with the pirates..everyone reported that.
