Free Agents

It's realistic that the Pirates could go out & spend $20M on FA's this year {They won't do it} but, It could get 3 top line players. Let's have a vote what 3 legit FA's would you want to see signed & for how much each? Remember $20M.

There is no guarantee that the Yankees will continue to dominate baseball. However, they do have signs of future success.

The Pirates have a certain set of resources to maximize team potential. This organization cannot dominate the free agent wars. They must build within at the minor league level. I like the signs of success. It might not guarantee future success, However, it certainly is a strong belief that things will get better in the future real soon.

Alot of players ripped it up in the minors but did not make it in the majors.Management is building the foundation, but there is no guarantee we will be pennant winners 3 years from now. Even though i hope so!!

"but results will be the bottom line"

These players are ripping up the minors. This deserves praise.

Russell might be the manager opening day 2011, but he will not be there in 2012.

When Alvarez is called up, this will take some pressure off of Jones. We have not played good fundamentel baseball all year and that falls on the manager.I like John Russell but i don't know if he is the one to lead this team to the top.I think we replaced Washington as the anchor of the NL.

Sadly, Jones has more power potential than anybody on the active 25 man roster. I do not care if he produces runs batting 7th or 4th. He needs to learn how to hit a lefty. This is the time to do it while the playoffs are not at stake. If moving him from the middle of the lineup makes him more comfortable against a left handed starter, I am Ok with that. If he publicly states he needs additional rest that is fine. He should get another 5% of the games off bringing it to 10% of the games. Please realize playing him at first base, will be far less wear and tear on his body.

How many games did the Iron Horse have to take off from first base? Jones must strive for greatness. He must understand that he is needed in the line-up. Jones must embrace this leadership role.

Jones strikes out a lot more and walks a lot less against lefties. He's under enormous pressure to produce in the clean-up spot, and an occasional day off might serve him well.

PR - Jones needs to be in the line-up everyday. He is not a platoon type player. If he played 65% games at first 30% in right and 5% on the bench, I am OK with that.

Polatta: Where did Walker and McCutchen come from if they did not come from the draft? How about all the hype surrounded around Pedro? The draft is and will always be the foundation for this organization until the economics of the game change.

Doumit, Maholm or Duke, LaRoche or Young and Church should all be shopped at the trade dead line. I would love to throw in Clement, Aki and Morton into the mix. All these players’ future costs will exceed what they will return in value to the organization. If the organization could secure one top prospect seasoned minor league player for this group, I would be very pleased. Doumit is solid, but the Pirates have depth at that position. The financial burden that would be relieved would ensure the Pirates the funds to sign all drafted players this season and nex

Pirates Nation:

How 'bout Jones-Milledge in right field, Doumit-Pearce at first base, Jaramillo-Doumit at catcher?

uggla and dunn would have looked great playing for the pirates but they are not here and are not coming.maybe they should try doumit at 1st for awhile and bring up kratz or maybe play young for awhile and see what he can do playing everyday.this team needs offense and millegde just isn't doing much.he is projected to have 49 rbi's for the season which stinks.if they keep this up we will be talking this time next year, should they draft anthony rendon or larry green.

Polatta, I made fun of you for suggesting the Pirates should acquire Adam Dunn last year but I will admit when I was wrong. Dunn would have been huge in Pittsburgh with that short porch in right, he would have 40 to 50 bombs. Thats what the Pirates need is a left handed power bat. Im all for hording money for the future but they could have gotten Dunn for a song and then there would have been somebody in the lineup that other teams would have feared. I dont think the two trade proposals you just mentioned would do all that much because you would be mortgaging your future for two players. Sanchez is the future catcher, Meek the future closer, and Lincoln could be a solid 3. Im okay with trading the other guys you mentioned though.

Arizona, I gave solutions last year, but they didnt add Dunn last year. Trade Brad Lincoln, Tony Sanchez, Paul Maholm, and Evan Meek for Dan Uggla. Trade Bryon Morris, Andy LaRoche, and Tim Alderson for Hunter Pence.

Starting 2011 lineup: CF McCutchen LF Tabatta 2B Uggla 3B Pedro 1B Jones RF Pence C Doumit SS Cedeno P Duke

Lets quit acting like we are building thru the farm system and the draft. They have had a top 5 pick basically in the draft for 15 years and we dont have anything via the draft. Fill the holes with quality players, now theres an idea. And dont ask whos gonna pitch cause were gonna win with the bats!! Your welcome Neal. Pull the trigger!

Lancem: Instead of complaining about the 2 corner outfield positions, what do you suggest?

Tabata has been very productive in his 2 games. If the season ended today, Milledge has reached a level where I think he deserves to play for the Pirates in the opening lineup of next season. Who would you put in his place? After Pedro comes up and possibly Kratz or Giminez, I do not see any more players MLB ready in the farm system. Jones does not have the speed to play the corner outfield position everyday. I like him at first. The team is still not ready to make a big splash in free agency. Why divert resources from signing future potential all stars in the MLB draft. These are the players that could make a big difference! Free agency at best is a band-aid at this stage for the Pirates. The foundation has not secured the proper seasoning. Who do you think the Pirates should trade or get back?

Instead of the bitc**** come up with solutions!

after 2 games lets not get carried away with tabata.the pirates can not afford in the long run to play both milledge and tabata,2 players who have no power and no run production.

Arizona Bruce- While losing a qualified fielding coach hurt it doesn't excuse Andy LaRoche for regressing. I shudder on any ball hit to his backhand. And for a new 2nd baseman Neil Walker is fielding well without the old coach. The talent of the current fielders is lacking in comparison to the previous players.

Polatta:

Tabata is now 375 - I will take Tabata. Milledge's numbers are not that bad that he is a team killer like Aki. We all know Pedro is the future so why place LaRoche in the mix? As long as Clement, Morton and Aki are not on the 25 man roster at all next season, the team can reach repectability. It is in 2012 that the team will make an impact.

I can't wait to securing the next required draft class to complete the foundation for the Pirates first run at a World Series since 1979.

McLouth has a .176 batting average and three homers. Are you talking about a different guy?
